How to use a facial gua sha: step-by-step massage
A gua sha is a smooth, flat stone that you glide over your skin with an oil or a serum. It comes from Chinese tradition and has found its way into skincare routines all over the world, and for good reason: in five minutes your face looks more awake, rested and radiant. Here is how to do it properly.
In short
- Always on clean skin with an oil or serum, never dry.
- Upward and outward strokes, with the stone almost flat.
- 5 minutes, 3 or 4 times a week, ideally at night.
What you need
- A facial gua sha. Ours comes in rose quartz or black obsidian, with edges shaped for each area of the face.
- An oil or a serum so the stone glides without pulling the skin. For combination or oily skin, Balance Serum or jojoba oil. For dry or mature skin, Regenerating Serum or rosehip oil.
The massage, step by step
Repeat each movement 3 to 5 times, then do the other side of your face. Keep the pressure gentle: you should feel the stone, never pain.
- Prepare your skin. On a clean face, spread 3 or 4 drops of oil or serum over your face and neck.
- Neck. Glide the stone upwards, from the base of your neck to your jawline.
- Jawline. Using the V-shaped edge, follow your jawline from your chin to just below your ear.
- Cheeks. With the long side, glide from your nose towards your ear, following the cheekbone.
- Eye area. With the most rounded part and very light pressure, from the inner corner of the eye to the temple.
- Brow and forehead. From between your brows upwards, then from the centre of your forehead out to your temples.
- Finish. Bring the stone down from your temples, in front of your ear and along the side of your neck.
When and how often
About 5 minutes, 3 or 4 times a week, is ideal. Night time is perfect: as part of your skincare routine, after your serum and before your cream, and as a moment to switch off. It also works in the morning if you want a more awake-looking face.
A tip: keep the stone in the fridge. The cold gives a lovely fresh feeling first thing in the morning.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using it dry. Without oil or serum the stone pulls the skin.
- Pressing too hard. More pressure does not mean better results.
- Holding it upright. Keep the stone almost flat, at about 15 degrees to the skin.
- Working downwards on the face. Strokes go upwards and outwards, except for the final step on the neck.
How to clean it
After each use, wash it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, dry it with a towel and keep it in its pouch. As it is a natural stone, avoid knocks and very hot water.
Frequently asked questions
Rose quartz or obsidian?
Both work the same way. Rose quartz is the classic and stays cool for longer; black obsidian is bolder and more elegant. Choose the one you like best.
Can I use it with essential oils?
Yes, but always diluted: at most 1 drop of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil, and never near the eyes.
Is there anyone who shouldn't use it?
Avoid it on inflamed spots, wounds, sunburn or irritated skin. If you have rosacea or very sensitive skin, check with your dermatologist first.
